Visitors can link supported international bank cards to Weixin Pay inside WeChat for eligible merchant purchases in mainland China. Card linkage, identity verification and payment approval are separate steps. Check the fee and selected card on the payment screen before confirming.
Tencent’s international-card guidance lists major supported networks and confirms that the fee exemption includes payments of RMB200 or less. Acceptance still depends on the card, merchant and transaction.
What you need before adding a card
Prepare your own WeChat account, a supported card and access to the phone number used for verification. If identity verification is requested, use the document options offered for your nationality, such as a passport. A foreign visitor does not need a PRC passport simply because an older guide listed one.
How to link and use your card
- Open WeChat and look for Me → Services → Wallet → Cards or the equivalent payment section in your version.
- Choose Add Card, enter your own card details and complete the issuer or identity checks requested.
- At an eligible merchant, scan the merchant’s payment code or show your payment code to the cashier.
- Confirm the merchant, amount, currency, card and any fee. Check the completed payment record before trying again if the result is uncertain.
Interface examples from the original guide are retained below. Menu names, layout and available features may differ in your current app.

Fees: what does RMB200 mean?
Tencent’s 2026 cross-border payment announcement says all international-card users receive fee-free transactions of RMB200 or less. It also describes an eligible first-time-user waiver for 90 consecutive days, on daily spending up to RMB1,000. Check the in-app offer terms; a promotion is not a permanent promise for every account.
Tencent describes the international-card processing fee as 3% before an applicable waiver. For larger payments outside a waiver, review the fee displayed before approval. Your card issuer may separately charge for foreign currency or overseas use. Compare the final debit with your receipt rather than assuming the wallet’s exchange rate is the only cost.
What are the transaction limits?
Tencent’s 2024 service update announced limits of up to US$5,000 per transaction and US$50,000 annually for verified international users. These are published ceilings, not guaranteed limits for your account. Use the current wallet and issuer limits; the old fixed RMB6,000/RMB50,000/RMB60,000 figures should not be relied on.

Merchant payments are different from transfers
An international-card purchase is not the same as topping up a balance, sending a red packet or transferring money to a person. Do not assume that linking a card enables those functions. Check the funding options shown for the specific transaction.
Similarly, a store accepting Weixin Pay does not guarantee that every funding source will work. If payment fails, note the error, check the selected card and issuer controls, and ask whether the merchant can accept another method. Repeated attempts can create confusion if a payment is still processing.

Keep a backup payment option
Try an ordinary small purchase before relying on the wallet for a time-sensitive booking. Keep the transaction record and a second payment option. The screenshots illustrate earlier transactions and do not establish current acceptance at every merchant.
